Invisalign Cost Vs. Braces Cost

Orthodontics

A healthy set of natural pearly whites that are perfectly aligned is a rare sight. People with misaligned teeth, overbite problems, or other problems like crowding teeth, are bound to feel conscious, and might shy away from laughing or smiling in a crowd. There are different types of orthodontic braces which could be opted for. However, people prefer invisalign braces these days. They are clear plastic aligners placed in the mouth to straighten mild problems of misaligned teeth and malocclusion. There is a huge difference, when it comes to the cost of invisalign and regular braces.

Factors Affecting the Cost

The cost of orthodontic metallic braces ranges from USD 5,000 to USD 8,000, while the invisalign cost estimate ranges from USD 10,000 to USD 12,000. Here are various reasons for the cost variance between the two.

Aesthetics
People opt for invisalign, because this is an excellent aesthetic option. These clear plastic aligners are nearly invisible in broad daylight and are also removable. It is convenient to remove them. You can remove them when attending a function or during the day, and then put them back at night. Metallic braces do not offer these options, as they are firmly secured in place with the help of wires and brackets. Considering the various pros and cons of invisalign braces, this is the main factor that works in favor of invisalign. However, it is also the main factor that raises the cost of invisalign.

Orthodontist’s Expertise
Invisalign is still not a very popular/acceptable option in comparison to the traditional metallic braces. Also, not all orthodontists are comfortable providing this treatment. So, there are very few dental clinics where this treatment is offered, as very few orthodontists are qualified for this treatment. Lack of seasoned orthodontist’s expertise in this matter, leads to proportional increase in the cost. Comparatively, there are more doctors qualified for metallic braces treatment.

Patient Motivation
Patient motivation, could be another factor, that may contribute to the increasing cost of the invisible braces. This is a removable orthodontic appliance, so some people take undue advantage of this laxity, and do not wear the appliance for the stipulated twelve to fourteen hours. Tooth movement is a slow and gradual process and mild force has to be applied constantly to ensure that tooth movement occurs in a physiological manner. So, if people do not wear the aligners regularly, the required mild force does not get applied. Eventually, at the next appointment, the new set of aligners, that are made and ready at the orthodontist’s clinic do not fit (as the required tooth movement has not occurred). In such cases, the orthodontist has to again take an impression and give the new measurements to the laboratory for fabrication of new aligners, which adds to the cost further.

Invisalign is a relatively new and aesthetic option for orthodontic treatment, which costs more than traditional braces. However, it is advised that you first check with your orthodontist to know if you would actually benefit from the use of the invisible aligners.
